Description

Yesterday we hiked through some of the grounds of an old mental hospital that was closed and shuttered 44 years ago in 1973. This is an old cow barn cupola vent built with the barns in 1914.

I guess that's one way of outgassing. Nice shot.

Interesting - slats on 2 sides, open on the other 2 sides. Makes me wonder - was it built this way, or did the slats on the open sides come off with time? And, I wonder if the inside room has birds in it? The slats were usually to keep critters out. Keep up the good work! :-)

We need to go back there one afternoon when the light is better. Knowing what-all there is to see, I can happily spend an afternoon just at the barns, not worrying about what's around the corner! LOL! This is a terrific shot of something I didn't get a good look at.

your history makes this quite poignant. I realize this is from the barn---not the hospital---but still, it has a painful air, given that a mental hospital was nearby, which was shut down some years back. (It may have been shut for good reasons, but it does feel strange and haunting, given that people with pained minds were inside it). As for the shot, full size is a must: Real clarity on the decayed shingles---I assume all wood---and the soil and moss all over it. All is really visible, full size. And it's so stark against that blue sky. And it tapers off to empty sky, on the right. Beautiful stark shot, with real detail on the wood. Very refined work, Bill.
