Description

General Robert E Lee still in a controversy, after so many years since the Civil war ended on April 9, 1865. people want the statues removed from public property so Confederate ideology will not be continued to be an everyday presence. there were many police there at the park, because of numerous protests over the Southern United States, about the statues not being on public property. a group on joggers went by with one carrying a US flag. the area of the statue had metal barriers around the statue, because the company that is removing it is waiting for a crane to arrive. the statue maybe gone by Monday. for those wishing to know more about the General https://www.civilwar.org/learn/biographies/robert-e-lee

Personally, I would not have removed it. It's history now. (But I must say that we dont have in France a statue of Marechal Petain. He and his government collaborated with Germany.)

I have mixed feelings about this whole thing. The statues are beautiful pieces of art in their own right. Perhaps many will find a home in a museum yard devoted to statues as art without the negative feelings attached. It is important to remember our history, even the bad, so that we don't repeat it.

Controversy. That is caused by small groups of SOB people who force their "feelings" onto the rest of us. I hope someone can find ANTIFA statues that can be removed so they can realize what injury they are causing other people. Man, this kind of destruction makes me seething mad! It's NOT a statue of Hitler or Mussolini (the authors of fascism).. Lee had nothing doing with that ideology. The REAL fascists here are the ANTIFA thugs. I sincerely hope this crap will vanish down the sewer where it belongs!

Many forget Lincoln regarded Robert E Lee so highly, he offered the command of the Union army to Lee.

Lee objected not because he believed in slavery but because one of his first tasks would be to lead the Union army into his home of Virginia and fight against his relatives, friends & family.

Prior to the Civil War many of the Union and Confederate officers attended West Point and remained friends through out the war, even though they led armies which opposed each other on the battlefields.

President Johnson (Lincoln's successor) offered Lee an amnesty, unlike Jefferson Davis who after the war was imprisoned and after release moved to Canada.

Such a tragic war...
