Great Blue skimmer - (Libellula vibrans) - immature female Also called King Skimmers because of the size. 2.3" in length - largest North American Skimmer These big showy Dragonflies have Brilliant White faces and mature specimens of both sexes have Vibrant Blue Eyes. Juveniles of both sexes have brown eyes. North American Range (Though Not Limited To): Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee,Texas, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Ontario Adults are most active in the peak summer months. Males can be seen resting on vegetation for long periods of time. They are quite bold and often allow close approach more than most Dragonflies. Mating occurs while perched. Many other species mate in flight. Females flick fertilized eggs onto the shore after picking up a drop of water to help them stick to the ground. Larva hatch and develop in still waters. I do not see this species every season and usually when I do they are only around for a few weeks instead of the entire season. The same is true for the Gray Petaltail species I posted 2 days ago.
