Just at the moment of combustion! The big air scoop on the bottom is for the oil cooler and the smaller one (unseen) is for the updraft SU carburetor of a Merlin. Bear with me.. I am of the jet era and barely know the external difference between those that have Rolls-Royce Merlins and Packard Merlins that had a big intercooler and a two stage supercharger obvious on the engine outside the airplane. Next you will wonder if it know if it has an air compressor for pneumatic landing gear like a Huricane. Everyone (?) has seen the Mustang with one landing gear going up into the well sideways as the other follows a considerable ways behind supposedly from the low power of the hydraulics or the manual wobble pump.
