The Vanguard has a radial engine. This is a P-40N in the markings of the American Volunteer Group (aka the Flying Tigers). The markings are not accurate for this plane, however, as the AVG flew the P-40B, which was an earlier version.

The air scoop on the top of the nose like an early Mustang indicates it has a Stromberg downdraft carburetor and is an Allison 1710 powered aircraft. You found the fun not just in identification but in maintenance of integrity.
