Description

When we go to Annapolis we often stop in a certain crab house. Having finally found the front entrance to the eating area (as compared to wandering in the bar entrance or fumbling over the outdoor deck entrance) I was surprised by two paintings near the hostess station. One is a small cargo-like vessel with GER 2 painted on the bow and the other is this submarine with 593 painted on the sail. Both numbers caused a double-take as they became "famous" when I was in my teens. GER 2 is still afloat as a museum... in the DPRK. It's the USS PUEBLO. SSN-593 is at the bottom of the Atlantic; it's the USS THRESHER. No one around to ask questions of who looked as if they could answer any questions I may have (our waiter was far more interested in his iPhone than in serving us [one step up from pocket pool]), so I have to surmise these pictures are a homage to those who suffered in actively darker days of the Cold War. Interestingly, THRESHER was the lead boat of that class but the group was re-named PERMIT-class (SSN 594). I did a stint on the last of the class in 1970: USS HADDOCK (SSN 621) [now recycled to make way for newer, more capable construction]. Definitely more comfortable than the diesels, but "something" was missing (maybe it was the lack of stale air and smoke being pulled back inboard during snorkeling). Enjoy; thanks for viewing.
