Description

The mission was established by the Jesuit father Eusebio Fransisco Kino in January 1691 near a Sobaipuri settlement on the east side of the Santa Cruz River. Services were held in a small adobe structure built by the inhabitants of the village. The Sobaipuri were Pima or O'odham indigenous groups that lived in Pimeria Alto, today's Northern Sonora, Mexico and Southern Arizona, USA. After the O'odham rebellion of 1751 the mission was abandoned for a time. In 1752, the village was reestablished and in 1753 the church of the Mission San Jose de Tumacacori began construction at the present site on the west side of the Santa Cruz River. This first church structure was erected for use by the mission in 1757. The architectural style of the church is Spanish Colonial. Shortly after, the Presidio San Ignacio de Tubac was established 4 miles downriver to protect the mission and surrounding area. The low structure at the right is the Convento Ruin. It was likely that the rooms in this building were used by the mission priest. The rooms in the Convento have seen much use, both during the mission era and afterwards. After the mission residents left in 1848 it was used as a house by various people and was even used as a school in the 1930's. This picture was taken on 12 November 2017, Sig...

It is great to see the building in its environment. The landscape tells a lot of the story too :-)
