Description

This is another view of the Mission San Jose de Tumacacori which was established by the Jesuit Father Kino in 1691. Sometimes during the mid-1700's rumors spread within the Spanish kingdom that the Jesuits priests had amassed a fortune on the peninsula and were becoming very powerful. On February 3, 1768 King Carlos III ordered the Jesuits forcibly expelled from the Viceroyalty of New Spain (colonial Mexico) and returned to Spain. The Franciscans took over in the operation and maintenance of the missions in Primeria Alta. In 1800 they began construction of a new, much grander church that took 20 years to complete. But designs had to be scaled back twice due to lack of funding. At that time Mexico was embroiled in its wars for independence and money for fancy missions was scarce. Despite that the church was never completed services began in 1820 but lasted only until 1828 when the Mexican Government forced all Spanish settlers to leave the country. The mission was closed completely following the end of the Mexican-American war in 1848. After the mission was closed and abandoned it began falling into severe disrepair. In 1854, after the Gadsden Purchase it became a part of the U.S. Arizona Territory. This picture was taken on 12 November 2017, Sig...
