Description

The Priory of Serrabonne, founded in the early eleventh century, is located in the Pyrenees-Orientales (France) on the eastern foothills of the Canigou massif, and is regarded as a masterpiece of Romanesque art. The earliest mention of the site dates back to 1069, when a parish church dedicated to the Virgin was mentioned. Thirteen years later, in 1082, a college of canons of the Augustunian order was established in the area. The thick walls of the nave are built of local schist rubble stone. The second construction was more elaborate and used large blocks of cut schist which were carefully placed.The sculptures in the cloister, the main portal, the window in the apsidole and the gallery, are all worked in pink marble, which makes a startling contrast to the green-grey of the schist.(infos wikipedia) Most infos with the next post. Le prieuré de Serrabonne, fondé au début du XIe siècle, est situé dans les Pyrénées-Orientales (France) sur les contreforts orientaux du massif du Canigou. C'est un chef-d'oeuvre de l'Art Roman. La plus ancienne mention du lieu remonte à 1069, date à laquelle une église paroissiale dédiée à la Vierge est citée. Treize ans plus tard, en 1082, un collège de chanoines de l'ordre de Saint Augustin est établi dans les lieux. Les murs épais de la nef sont construits en moellons de schiste local. La deuxième construction était plus élaborée et utilisait de grands blocs de schiste taillé soigneusement placés. Les sculptures du cloître, du portail principal, de la fenêtre de l'abside et de la galerie sont toutes travaillées en marbre rose, ce qui fait contraste avec le vert-gris du schiste.
