Description
A few days late, but hey.
An impression of sunset on the day of the winter solstice. The standing stones are from Merlin's Celtic stones collection, and represent the Men-an-Tol, or Crick Stone, which is in Cornwall, UK, not too many miles down the road from me. No-one really knows what the Men-an-Tol was used for, but theories are that it may have been part of a tomb entrance, or a marker that was originally lined up to frame some important astronomical event near the horizon, which is the interpretation I've used for the picture. Probably the two interpretations are not that far apart, as the death and eventual rebirth of the summer sun and the vegetation it supported were celebrated at the winter solstice in ancient times in many countries.
