Description
The Longyi is a sheet of cloth widely worn in Burma. It is approximately 2 metres (6.6 ft) long and 80 centimetres (2.6 ft) wide. The cloth is often sewn into a cylindrical shape. It is worn around the waist, running to the feet. It is held in place by folding fabric over without a knot. It is also sometimes folded up to the knee for comfort. Similar garments are found in India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Malay Archipelago. In the Indian subcontinent it is known variously as a lungi, longi, kaili or saaram.

Amazing photo!

I expect it's quite comfy!

I expect it is quite UNcomfy. Just a bit of wind and it is sticking to the legs like glue. I would HATE using that. And certainly not without shoes.

Hi Helle Buddhists are forbidden to pray at the Pagoda whilst wearing any type of footwear. That's why they are all barefoot in this photo! To enter, everyone MUST have there legs covered and feet bare as a mark of respect to Buddha. Andrew.

Love the ornate architecture, but I'm not longing to be wearing longyi & my past history of plantar fasciitis makes it unwise for me to be walking around barefoot for very long. I admire & respect Buddhist philosophy, but those rules seem pretty arbitrary...
