Description

Mark offered me the sun and the moon, and probably a bunch of cash, if I would do a series of pictures of tanks. The whole thing, mind you, with all the relevant accompanying information. You know ... like I cared about tanks. LOL! I was able to find a picture in my files of a whole tank. (One! Imagine that!) It was a good picture, as these things go. Nice and sharp. If you looked at it on the gallery page, you would have thought the photographer was Bill or Sig. Well, actually, if you knew anything about tanks, probably not. I showed the picture to Bill, and he didn't SAY he didn't like it, but he did point out that it was missing its 50 caliber gun, and the turret was facing the wrong way, and that it was a picture of the back of the tank, not the front. It looked like he was in a little bit of pain when he talked about it. He thought the museum could have done a better job. He offered to let me have one of his pictures of tanks, if I wanted one. When I told Bill I thought the picture was boring, he said maybe I should put it in a nice landscape, rather than in a parking lot. I was forced to tell him that it wasn't the parking lot that was boring. Fortunately, I had this picture of that same tank, just a little bit less of it. Apparently this is an M551 Sheridan AR/AAV. Just in case YOU care, because you KNOW I don't! :P So there you go, Mark. I sent you the picture of the whole tank in an email, but I couldn't bring myself to put it in my gallery. I'll have to get the sun and the moon and a wad of cash some other way. :P

Nice shot of the treads. The history of the Schützengrabenvernichtungspanzerkampfwagen (Trench annihilation armored car) is actually pretty interesting and the machine itself is a marvel of engineering.

(I'm not back yet due to hospital matters etc, but I had to acknowledge this.) The image is gorgeous, tara, it's pure you, and you've softened, zeroed in, gotten atmosphere and flow, autumnal late-day light, mystery, all of it. The rust and dark charcoal hues make wonderful contrasts too. (And your angle makes it feel like it goes on forever.) I was challenging you to post a shot of something you find no visual 'call' for---like tanks, lol---without zeroing in, excerpting, etc. For the fun of it---I'd have given a million bucks to see 6 huge, massive, stark tank shots in your gallery! But I have to say, the original you sent me was much better than you thought. But I understand that tanks aren't your "first calling" as a photographer. So you returned to your unique territory, and made this instead. Bet's off---you did a beautiful job, and ya don't have to worry about losing. This more than makes up for your not being one of the world's 10 best tank photographers. You can leave that to Bill and others. Beautiful job.

(And what in the world is "Schützengrabenvernichtungspanzerkampfwagen"? GIven that Mark wrote it, I know it's real; but really, that's a joke, right? That's a helluva name for a lowly tank...)

I would never have guessed that this was a tank until I read the bit about it, shows what I know about tanks eh!!! I think you have softened this tank like it should be softened and it can sit quite nicely into your gallery. Like I said who would know it was a tank. 😃

It's a tankless job, isn't it, Tara? But tanks anyway for this lovely and beautifully composed shot. And no worries either, as far as your career as a photographer tanking anytime soon. OK... I'll stop..... I know I'm 'treading' into bad pun valley....

I really do love the contrasts in light and shadow, and warm vs cool colors. And of course, the way the tread softens as it recedes into the distance really pulls you into the photo.

BTW, Mark.... Hang on to that million bucks - I have a few photos of tanks I'll gladly post. You know who to make the check out to, right? Tanks for that!

I think Bob Hope said it best, "tanks for the memories" actually, if you had posted the picture of the entire tank, I would have sworn that someone had hacked your account. the entire object, in one photo? You're the one artist who finds that unique bit of the whole and through some magic get the shot with just the right lighting to make it totally yours.

I drove, then TC'd one of those for two years at NTC. It's a beautiful leaky rattle trap. I do miss it. That one must be sitting in a museum, all the rubber is on the road wheels and idler wheels.

great POV and lighting for this, you turn a tank into a abstract in a piece of art! Bravo!

Love these rusty caterpillar feet. So we didnt get to see a full, whole tank in your gallery. AH! well! Tanks are not my largest fav object anyway, but I do like a proper close up of most things. Especially when it is rusty, so you hit the top of the list for me. Thank you for sharing, dear Tara :-) (And I had great fun reading the comments above)

Hilarious ! I just loved your narrative, Tara.

I live within 30 minutes of the Bovington Tank Museum, so if you and Bill ever get here he can visit it while we go to Monkey World rescue nearby !

Well done for the 'silk purse' job, BTW.

Fun reading the comments! For a close up expert like you I find this a great photo. and I've looked at the other photos and have had a few laughs at what can be done to a photo of these contraptions. So, keep up the good work! And my greetings to Bill! :-)

Tanks a lot. This is a very good image. One does not have to show the entire object if one does not want to.

This is a fantastic picture, and definitely you Tara. I love it. If I want a picture of the whole tank and information I google it. But I can see Bill's point, I.m the same way about aircraft I know or have worked on, and see whats missing or nor right almost instantly!
