Description

Hi dear friends, What you see here is one of the cave dwellings near Valkenburg, what is about 20 minutes from us by car. This photo I took last summer while we made a walk in the area through the woods in South Limburg. Worth to zoom for the textures. About these Cave dwellings: If you walk south from the Geulhemermolen (near Valkenburg) up the Geulhemmerberg, you will soon see white walls with windows and doors on your left. You look at the outer wall of a cave house, a small house in the marl is cut out. Originally there were more of these cave dwellings. These were the residences of the so-called "block breakers", the workers working in the marl quarries. They sawed the big blocks out of the walls of the grooves and paid a rent of approx. 50 cents per year for the living space. The cottages were very sober and have been inhabited until about 1931. For the restoration of these cave houses in Geulhem a foundation was established in 1976, foundation De Rotswoning. The foundation maintains this unique heritage and provides guided tours in the Geulhemergroeve and a reconstructed cave house. You can find more info in English on this address: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geulhem Thank you very much for your look, as for your lovely comments on my other upload, it's very much appreciated. :)

My, how interesting. I see old carvings beside the renovation work with white stones. Would be nice to see one inside. Do you have some photos from inside? Keep up the good work. :-)

This is quite fascinating! Wonderful photo of this interesting dwelling. This area wasn't called the Shire by any chance, was it?
