Description
Penthesilea was queen of the amazons, famed for her beauty, wisdom and martial prowess. After the accidental killing of her sister Hyppolyta, and hearing of the slaying of Hector, she went seeking an honourable death in the defence of Troy. She too was slain there by Achilles, though he then came to deeply regret the deed. The story is thought to be told in the lost epic, the Aethiopis, which tells the tale of the Trojan War between the deaths of Hector and Achilles.
