Description
Projected in 1683, the tower was designed by Vauban in 1689. Construction of the building, supervised by engineer Jean-Pierre Traverse, began in 1693 and was completed in 1696. It essentially protects access to the battery, which defends anchorages, the strategic importance of which is crucial for the security of the harbour. The casemated tower is part of a vast defence system: the low battery must be equipped with eleven pieces of artillery crossing their fires with those of the Pointe du Grand Gouin, Quélern's primitive lines and numerous coastal batteries. The garrison then consisted of a lieutenant, a sergeant and five men supported by militiamen composed of inhabitants of Camaret.
