Description
In a barren area of Yfer, there is an ancient crater, of 10 km diameter, that was formed 25 million years ago by a 1 km size meteorite; that area was a large lake at that time. With time, the bottom of the lake was filled with sand, then, as the area was pushed up by geologic forces coupled with climate change during that epoch (about 500 000 years ago), the area became dry and the soil reached an altitude of 1 km. It became an arid area with a thin layer of dirty salt covering a few hundred meters of sand. Starting almost a century ago, a mining facility was built for extracting the iridium and lithium that was contained in the meteorite at the center of the crater. Mining operations ended 30 years ago because most of the precious metal was mined out. 10 years later, using most of what was remained from the mining facility, a test facility for large propulsion system was built : The Termites crater test facilities.
In this picture, one can see the rim of the crater (the mountains), the electrical generator that is using nuclear fusion (at the foreground), a sprawling building that is the living quarters of all workers (mid part of the picture; the 2 spheres are water reservoirs), and an inverted "V" structure at the center of the crater (at the right of the picture).
A Vautour freighter aircraft is preparing for landing on such unstable soil.
