Description
The castle of Vayres was the scene of fighting in the 18th century because the Gourgue family joined the parliamentary Fronde, against Mazarin and the young king Louis XIV. The castle is badly damaged.
Around 1700, Jacques-Joseph de Gourgue, bishop of Bazas, undertook the restoration. He had modifications made to bring the building up to date: on the Dordogne side, the bodies of buildings were harmonized and a monumental staircase was created spanning the moat. This staircase is one of the most remarkable architectural elements of the Château de Vayres. At the beginning of the 18th century, the drawbridge and the barbican were replaced by a "dormant" bridge and a Vauban portico through which one now enters the castle.
The castle of Vayres has not been transformed since that time.

J'aime beaucoup le point de vue sur cette façade dont certains éléments évoquent un château défensif dans un ensemble Renaissance! Superbe photo!
