Description

The Notre-Dame de Verdelais Basilica is a 17th century Catholic religious building located in the heart of Verdelais, a small commune in Gironde (France). A chapel built in the 11th century to house a statue of the Virgin Mary brought back from the Holy Land became a place of Marian pilgrimage and was rebuilt several times. Still a popular place of pilgrimage for the Catholics of New Aquitaine, the church was elevated to the rank of a minor basilica on July 31, 1924. It has been listed as a historic monument since 31 March 2000.
