Description

The first church, built in the 13th century, was in Romanesque style. It consisted of a single nave with barrel vaults. However, the basilica, as we know it today, is rather recent. It was built in the 17th century by the Celestines, who added a transept and enlarged it. The whole building is in Renaissance style and the altarpiece is Baroque. At the top of the bell tower, designed by the architect Duphot, you can see an imposing statue of the Virgin Mary. This statue of 3.75 meters, realized by Duchaine and Armand Caillat, respectively sculptor and goldsmith, is out of copper and covered with a gold film. Many ex-voto such as engraved marble slabs or various objects were deposited as a sign of thanks for the miracles operated. The stained glass windows in the church choir illustrate scenes related to the history of the sanctuary.
