Description
The location of the original enclosure is unknown. It cannot be ruled out that it was built in the 16th century, at the same time as those of La Chaize-le-Vicomte and Tiffauges, on the initiative of the Viscount of Thouars, whose power extended over the whole of what is now the Vendée.
Built in the second half of the 15th century and at the beginning of the 16th century by Louis de Beaumont from white Sallertaine stone, the castle was dismantled by order of the Cardinal of Richelieu in 1628, as were other castles in the region at the same time. Six years after the defeat of Soubise at Notre-Dame-de-Riez and Saint-Gilles-sur-Vie. It was then the property of the Trémoille family, former Protestant lords.
The castle was listed as a historic monument in 1926
