Description
Every year, the association of the Friends of the Old Castle of Commequiers organises various events, including the "Medieval" festival, which takes place over two days in period costume.
The oldest known lord of Commequiers ("Quemeiquiers" in Old French) is Urvoidus, who participated in 1093 in the foundation of the priory of Saint-Nicolas at the Chaize-le-Vicomte by Aimery IV of Thouars. Urvoidus was certainly a vassal of the Thouars. In 1099 he was appointed Baron de Commequiers, who dominated the parishes of Soullans, Saint-Christophe-du-Ligneron, Maché and le Perrier. In addition, five châtellenies were attached to it, including La Vérie near Challans. By arrangement marriage, the barony of Commequiers was attached to the Seigneury of Montaigu at the end of the 12th century. At the beginning of the 14th century, the new baron de Commequiers was the lord of the Forêt-sur-Sèvre, Josselin.
