Description
While Athena is revered as godess of wisdom, she is also godess of war (amongst other things) and not entirely the wisest or most rational of the Greek pantheon. Witness her turning Arachne into a spider in a fit of pique for beating her in a weaving competition, or transforming the beautiful hapless Medusa into a hideous gorgon becuase she was raped by Poseidon in Athena's temple, which she took as an insult to herself! On the other hand she destroyed most of Agamemmnon's fleet returning from Troy in reprisal for Ajax abducting Cassandra who had claimed sanctuary in Athena's temple...
...all in all, as capricious as any of the Greek gods it would seem!
So here she is, in haughty demeanour with her spear and golden helmet and the protective serpent of Athens. The owl of wisdom has somewhat been relegated to the background.
