Description

These Alpackas love to eat Hogweed and we can get the most nasty skin infection just by a gentle touch on our skin . A strange world :) They let these and cheeps eat them and when there is no more, they move the animals to a new big area with fences and so. In this way they can get rid of these beautiful plants.. Kind of pitty. As I was a child, we had a water stream near this place and it was always full of hogweed. I never heard of accidents with them and nobody thought about getting rid of them. What a sight it was to see them.

Alpacas in your neck of the woods? Very interesting. They're a long-haired domesticated South American mammal related to the llama, valued for its wool. So you have them up in Denmark to help eradicate the hogweed. Doesn't the hogweed infect their mouth, lips, nose, etc., when they eat it?

That is so interesting, Helle! It is extraordinary how they are not affected. I never knew about this before, fascinating!

when I saw your title (the ebot), I thought: What??? Alpacas---in DK??? Are they on summer vacation??? Do you know how strange it is to see these near your home??? They should be in South America, playing with an Incan band, and wearing those big hats and heavy scarves. (How's that for cultural stereotypes...) Well, importing animals to do the work of pesticides is terrific, because it's so much more natural than poisons. Birds eat heavy pepper seeds---which would burn our stomachs badly---but the seeds do nothing to the birds. So alpacas apparently can eat bjørneklo (see, I used the danish again---I'm a full service commenter!) and not be effected. The pic is filled with back light, and the alpacas are so solid and hairy by contrast. Really nice picture, Helle, and I can't get over that this is DK. A real surprise of a shot. (And yes, their fleece is amazingly sturdy and warm. Like cashmere, 8 times warmer than wool...)

How very interesting about the hogweed! I can't imagine any creature could eat it without being harmed.

Hmmmm... Do they eat poison ivy? Can I borrow a couple if they do? LOL

A wonderful photo of these critters, Helle!
