Description

“Ryllae.” For a moment she didn’t recognize her own name when it was whispered in her ear; it had been so long since she was called anything other than ‘si’, the elven word for female, which was an insult in the eyes of her male drow captors. Then her foggy mind grasped that the voice was feminine, and familiar, as her eyes fluttered open and struggled to focus on the face before her. At first, she though she was still lost in reverie, but when she felt gentle hands take hold of her shoulders and realized that she was actually there. “Siril”, she gasped in disbelief, stunned to see her sister’s beaming smile. “I thought you were dead!” “I thought you were dead,” Siril squealed, a bit too load for her companion’s comfort, as she embraced her sister’s naked form and explained; “I escaped like father planed… but no one else showed at the rendezvous point. I waited till dawn, then snuck back in only to find the place infested with drow and saw mother’s and father’s bodies… I thought they had killed you too, so I fled to Tangled Trees.” “You ran off and left me… to them!” Ryllae scowled accusingly, her eyes swollen with tears, but ablaze with barely restrained furry. “There’ll be time for accusations and explanations later,” Coran interceded in a hush, but commanding voice, as he motioned Malark to get to work on the lock that held Ryllae chained to the frame of her parent’s bed. Siril had lead the sorcerer-thief, Aesar and him into a hidden passage from outside the palisade which lead them though the bowels of the manor and into her parent’s chambers, avoiding the drow sentries, while Kara and Sheera stood guard at the tunnel’s entrance. “Hurry,” Siril commanded Malark in a strong whisper, her eyes worriedly shooting to the door. “I’m keeping my promise,” he snapped back quietly. “You keep yours!” Slipping away from her sister with a snarl, she dashed across the room to her father’s library and began packing up his spell books, scrolls and magic items as she said she would if he focused on freeing Ryllae, while Aesar scoured over the documents spread out on a large table near the center of the room, and Coran moved to listen for signs that their presence had been detected by the door. By the time Malark had opened the lock, Siril returned with two large sacks full of ‘loot’, as well as some cloths she found for Ryllae, and motioned for the others to join them at the entrance to the secret passage. Coran quickly responded, diverting in mid-stride when he saw that Aesar had not moved, but rather than trying to force the him away from his inspection of the drow documents, he simple swept them all off the table and into the elven ranger’s pouch, drawing a scowl of both irritation and puzzlement. However, he did move quickly to the hidden door and followed the others into the secret passage. Making their way through the darkened passages, following the lead of the moon elven sisters who had played in them as children, they found Kara hiding in the mouth of the exit, while Sheera crouched in the open a few dozen feet away. If the drow sentries had come upon her, they wouldn’t have been suspicious of a hunting forest cat… most likely just avoided her and therefore the entrance to the secret passage. They had timed their intrusion so that they would be escaping just as the sun rose, giving them the greatest advantage over the sun-hating drow if they tried to pursue them into the forest, and were just barely within ear-shot when they heard an alarm raised… knowing that their foray had been detected.
