Description

Late afternoon found the companions reaching the Halfaxe Trail, where they finally stopped to rest at the tree line on the southern side, knowing that the main trade route was patrolled by both the Grey Riders, veteran rangers who bore the authority of Harrowdale, and the Red Plumes, the mercenary army of Hillsfar who were well known for their hatred of non-humans, so they were not likely to be welcoming to the heavily elven group, but would likely be even more hostile to the drow, who they saw as invaders into their territory. “Those are father’s,” Ryllae complained with a sour pout as she watched Malark flip through the stolen spell books, while Kara knelt beside her and used a minor healing prayer to treat the chafing the steel collar and harness her captures had used to restrain her had left on her sliken skin. Malark had removed them during a brief break in their flight, but they didn’t stop long enough for her to be healed then. “I promised him he could have them,” Siril explained soothingly as she cradled her sister in her arms. “I would have given anything to get you back safely.” “Really? I wish you had mentioned that earlier… this little venture could have been a lot more fun for both of us,” the thief-sorcerer taunted as he let his eyes roam lustfully over her delectable figure before turning his attention back to the tome in his lap. Both sisters just scowled at his bawdy comment, but neither bothered to reply. However, Coran knelt-down in front of him with a stern look, and challenged; “Sorcerers don’t use spell books… so what good are those to you… the scrolls and magic items I can understand, but not the spell books?” “Not unless we’re looking for new spells,” he snapped back harshly. Those who saw themselves as above him were always trying to cheat him out of what he had rightly stolen, and he wasn’t about to fall for the monk’s guilt game. “But once you’ve learned the spells you want, the books are useless to you,” Coran observed, trying to keep from sounding like he was reneging on Siril’s agreement with him. “Maybe then you can leave them with Ryllae, since they were her father’s.” “I’ll consider it,” Malark groaned… he didn’t want to admit that he had a point… but having an excuse to spend more time with the gorgeous elven sisters did appeal to him, especial if he had something they wanted which he could parley into a more intimate prize. Accepting that answer for now, Coran moved over to Aesar, who had been sorting through the documents that he had shoved into his pouch in the manor by a fire pit, crumbling and discarding most of them, but reserving quite a few. “Most of this is worthless,” the elven ranger growled as the monk approached. “Undoubtedly,” Coran concurred calmly. “But if you’d only taken what was important to you, the drow would have known what you were looking for and probable changed their plans. Taking everything will leave them believing that thieves just grabbed anything they could.” Aesar regarded the monk with a respectful nod, responding; “Not bad… but so far there isn’t much about any other drow bases or their intention toward Tangled Trees. In fact, they seem to be most concerned about being attacked by the neighboring drow.” “That makes sense,” Coran replied thoughtfully. “Their houses are always at each other’s throats… just because they’ve fled the Underdark doesn’t mean they’re going to change their ways.”
