Description
The Grumman F9F-8 "Cougar" was the updated swept wing version of the US Navy F9 "Panther". The Navy considered the two aircraft to be the same despite the name change, but from the F9F-6 onward, the new version sported the swept wing design and greater thrust capability. Continuing the carrier-based intent, the "Cougar" kept the basic design overall as the straight wing "Panther" but was influenced by the successful swept wing design of the capable Mig-15. Besides the new wing design, the F9F-8 version was equipped to handle the AIM-9 Sidewinder missile, and a small number were also equipped to carry nuclear armaments.
The "Cougar" arrived too late to see any action in the Korean War, and although available did not see action in Vietnam either. 110 aircraft were procured as reconnaissance aircraft, and 377 two-seat trainer versions were also added to the roster. The "Cougar" was replaced by the Vought F8U and the F-11 Tiger.
Grumman F9F-8 "Cougar": Excellent model by Pedro Caparros, generously available for free at sharecg. Thank you for another marvelous addition to the roster, Pedro!
Pilot figure: M3 figure with various adapted gear.
Figures set up in Poser Pro; composed, lighting, some texture adjustments, and rendered in Vue6Infinite; finished in PS Cs3.

Very nice!

As a kid I loved the fact that they both came molded in a dark blue plastic as model kits so I didn't have to paint them (LOL). A couple great movies were made with the "Panther" as the main carrier based jets. "Men of the Fighting Lady" with Van Johnson and "The Bridges at Toko Ri" staring William Holden. Really nice job with this posting!!!

Great render, the two seat was used in Vietnam by the Marines as a forward air controller.(and maybe for other things)

Great render. It's like a painting for air enthusiasts. Again a stunning model from Pedro. I would like to work with this model, but have no time to do it...
