Description
Fort Louvois is a 17th century maritime fortification, built on a rock immersed at high tide, between the island of Oléron and the Marennes basin. Its construction, decided by Louvois, Louis XIV's war minister, was carried out from 1691 to 1694 according to Vauban's plans. The objective was to cross gunfire with the Citadelle of Oléron to defend the Rochefort naval arsenal. Designed in the shape of a horseshoe, with a central keep protected by a drawbridge and a moat, it recalls the castles of the Middle Ages. Today, Fort Louvois opens its doors for an unusual and surprising visit! In the keep, a new scenography gives the keys to understanding the history of the fort. A plan-relief presents the fortifications of the littoral, from Gironde to Charente. At the top of the tower, orientation tables complete the panoramic view of the coureau d'Oléron. In the compound, discover the six rooms of the barracks (place of life of the garrison), the 24 pound guns and the powder magazine.
