After breakfast Nona was taking a nap and I thought this was the perfect chance to confront Guido and try to find the truth as to why he invited me to Italy. Out the front of the little cottage I voiced my concern to Guido that he was hiding the truth from me and if he did not respect me enough to come clean and tell me the truth I would be back on the next plane home. "Ok'a ok'a Maggie I will'a tell you'a truth" Guido said "Good I am listening Guido" I will translate what Guido told me to make it easier for you to understand haha, It is true that the little cottage has been in Guido's family for 100 years and Nona (Guido's Mama) was born in the cottage, Nona was also married in the cottage and lived in the cottage after the marriage, Guido was born in the cottage also and a few years after that Guido's Papa (father) was killed in a mining accident, Nona was left alone to raise Guido and often it was hard but she managed to do a pretty good job, So what is the big secret that Guido is hiding? It goes way back to when Guido's father was killed and the title of the cottage was transferred to Nona, There was a mix up and the title was misplaced and that means for the last 40 years or so no property taxes have been paid on the cottage, Now that the cottage is 100 years old someone has discovered this error and is seeking the unpaid property taxes, Back when the title was transferred to Nona the property taxes would have been only a small amount, But over the years with the price of houses and land going up the amount to be paid each year in property taxes has sky-rocketed, Now there is a very large sum of money that is outstanding and needs to paid within the next 7 days, Guido found out about the property tax debt several months ago and did not want to worry Nona because if the taxes are not paid then the cottage will be sold to repay the property taxes. Guido tried getting a loan from the banks, But only being on a policemans wage and having no real assets it was going to be a hard task to convince any bank to loan him the money. Guido had a plan of how to get the money, He knows how big the underground street racing scene is in Italy and that many cars are seized from such illegal events, Guido figured he could race one of the impounded cars in a race or two to raise the money and no one would be the wiser, Great plan Guido ... Getting a car from the police impound yard was no problem because Guido had been working as a security guard there after hours to earn a little extra cash, It all looked good for Guido and he might just get the money needed in time if all went to plan. Obviously it did not all go to plan or I would not be here in Italy, Guido got the car as planned and was on his way to a illegal street race when things went wrong, On the way Guido crashed the car and his world came crashing down around him. Guido quickly rang the people organising the illegal street race and told them he could not make it to the race, "No problem" they told him " You have 4 days until the next race and failure to attend will mean you owe us double the race prize money and we know you are a policeman and we know you do not want your superiors to know what you are doing so we know you will not fail us twice" "Guido" I said "Could you be any stupidier" Well that is the mess Guido is in and now I am in it as well.
