Description
First time for decades outside RAF Hendon!
A surprise due to Hendon's redevelopment, this was on the flightline at Legends.
As you know, well most do, the Battle of Britain was the longest single aerial Battle in history, and of course National pride and Mussolini could not let the Luftwaffe be the only ones involved on the Axis side. Unfortunately Italian aircraft while very finely built were made for, well look at the camo!!
So, they arrived in Belgium, the Germans laughed and said go back, but off they went.
The only major battle was a raid on Harwich and they met several squadrons of very battle experienced Hurricanes. They lost 3 bombers BR 20's and 3 CR42's. This example crash landed on a shingle beach after an oil pipe broke on the way to the UK! He made no attempt to get home. Apparently he was most pleased with his landing... Several other aircraft crash landed back in Belgium.
I must add that 3 Hurricanes were damaged. But after this bombers switched to night raids and very few of those....
Best view and shots I've ever got of this.

Great looking bird.

"Rock Me Amadeus", sorry wrong Falco. I remember reading about these. Woefully inadequate against Spitfires and Hurricanes but more comfortable for axis pilots in North Africa than fighters with cockpits that canopies couldn't be left open in flight like the BF109.
Great capture.

Beautiful photo! I never saw one of these in reality

Beautiful biplane, but outdated for 1940 European combat. Lots of service in North Africa against equally outdated RAF Gladiators. Lovely photo, Rob.

Great shot of a beautiful but outdated biplane. Love the propellers and spinner.

I wonder if any met the Brazilians in Sicily?
