TTC PCC 4549 On King Street by KatesFriend

It was a hot and hazy afternoon Saturday walking up Yonge Street in (what is still) the City of Toronto - soon to be the Grand Gerrymandered Fiefdom of Fordistan. I had already guzzled two bottles of (non-subsidized, unlike beer)1 apple juice and was seriously considering a third when, crossing King Street, this old gem quietly came to rest before the intersection. I have to admit that I have not seen one of the TTC's two remaining PCCs for some time. They are only out and about for movie shoots, private charters or special events these days. The PCC model first appeared in Toronto during the late 1930's and, in their 1950's heyday, numbered in excess of seven hundred (700) vehicles. Most acquired second hand but near new condition from American cities actively abandoning streetcar service post WWII. There were about eight (8) in service by the end of their tenure, the last revenue run for Toronto PCCs being in December 1995. Nevertheless, people will still try to board these old streetcars when operating on revenue tracks - as on King Street. Hence the 'PRIVATE' roll sign in the right (route, also called 'via') panel of the destination. This appears to be a fan charter which takes place two or three times during the summer months. As for 'SUBWAY' in the left (terminus, destination or short turn) panel, I'm pretty certain that this term predates Toronto subway service - underground trains. I believe that 'SUBWAY' was a reference to the underpass beneath intercity rail lines - many streetcar lines would terminate or short turn at these points back in the day. Depending upon the route of a charter, the driver will periodically update the destination panel just for the fun of it. And you can decipher much of the growth history of a transit system by reading through its roll signs. Damn, I miss roll signs or 'linens' as they were originally called.2 NOTES: TTC - Toronto Transit Commission PCC - Presidents' Conference Car WWII - World War Two References: 1I swear there should be a Charter challenge over Premier Doug Ford's3,4 plan to subsidize the price of beer. I still have to pay $3.25 a bottle for my apple juice. Oh, and his scheme to gerrymander the city's wards to elect more of his stooges to City council. 2Because they were originally printed on cloth. 3Yes, that Doug Ford. 4My tongue still sets itself on fire when I utter those words. I will never laugh at the terrible plight of my American cousins again.

Very cool shot! Must be a bit*h to take care of the power lines and tracks, lol, not to mention all the systems in the car. Guess you might need to put a snow plow on for the winter months... ❄️❄️❄️

I do recall the hoopla over these street cars when the other creepy Ford wanted to ditch them...guess he won. Can't believe that after the experience of that Ford monster the folks put in his brother to carry out the "Ford" evil agenda. Is there some subliminal message that is being communicated through various TV shows that cause people to vote for these monsters?

What a wonderful shot of this lovely streetcar! Perhaps the 'Subway' refers to the upcoming lunch stop. The chicken-bacon-ranch is particularly good... 😁
Seriously, I'd love to see a lot of these old public transport means come back into use. They've recently put in a nice light-rail system here in Kansas City. Very limited routes, though. I really must get down there and get a few photos.

You should copyright "Grand Gerrymandered Fiefdom of Fordistan". I'd buy the graphic novel! I love these old bullets. Did not know about "lines". Thanks for the trivia.
