Description
After visiting with Mr. Olgilvie, Brent and his Dad explore some of the old sheds behind
Mr. Olgilvie's house. They are full of over 100 years of stored 'treasures' obviously from
Mr. Olgilvie and his ancestors. Old clocks, radios, phonographs and other items too
numerous to mention. But they are all stacked neatly and in order. Nothing looks out of
place and everything is in good condition. The old buildings have weathered time well and
haven't let in the elements.
"Look here, Dad!' exclaims Brent. "I think you are going to like this!"
Brent's Dad enters a large room off to the side of where they entered. There on the floor
is what looks like the frame to a car. Several layers of boxes have been neatly stacked
upon it, but the form of the frame is unmistakeable.
"This is our most important find so far!" exclaims Brent's Dad. "This puts a whole new
slant on the restoration. I was worried about finding one of these. This one still looks
to be in prime condition. We'll have to carefully remove everything on top of it, then
put everything back in place once we remove it. I don't want to upset any of these items
of Mr. Olgilvie's."
As they take box after box off the car frame, one catches Brent's eyes. "Look here, Dad.
Are these the gauges for the dash? Look at the odometer. It only reads 23,000 miles.
Could that be possible?"
"If it is, then the old Merc hasn't seen much road travel at all. Mr. Olgilvie's sister
must not have driven it much when she had it in Arizona. And it certainly didn't get
driven once she got it up here. I guess it could be possible. We'll have to ask Mr.
Olgilvie about that."
After readying the car frame for removal, along with several boxes of parts for the car,
Brent and his Dad go back and visit some more with Mr. Olgilvie. He confirms that the
mileage on the old car is correct.
"My sister purchased the car new from a dealer in Winslow, Arizona. She bought it with
money she got when her husband was killed in an accident of some kind, I can't remember
the details. Anyway, she didn't drive it to work very much as she only worked a few
blocks from her house. She got lonely after several years and decided to come home to
here. She packed up her belongings and drove the Merc back to this place. The head
gasket blew just as she was coming into the driveway. I had to pull it the rest of the
way in. Poor old dear car. At least it got her here safely. She lived with me until she
passed away a few years ago."
The next day, Brent and his Dad borrowed a truck and picked up the frame and many other
items they found the previous day. It was always nice visiting with Mr. Olgilvie. He was
a fountain of information. He even had the owners manual for the old car stored away in
a desk somewhere. He was going to look for it and give it to them when he found it.
Now the parts are starting to come together. The frame is in the shop and Dad is looking
it over for any signs of wear and tear. "Looks like a real winner, son! We'll just sand
blast the rust away and give her a nice sealing coat of rust proof paint and she will
be good to go. Then we can start work readying the body for a primer coat."
"This is really exciting, Dad! I can't wait to see what she will look like when we are
done with her!" exclaimed Brent.
"Patience, son! You need to be patient! All good things in their time. We want to do
this job right don't we?"
"We sure do Dad!"
