Description
Brent and his Dad take an inventory of everything Brent has brought back from Mr. Olgilvie's
farm thus far. It falls far short of what is needed to bring the old Mercury back to life.
"I think we should pay a visit to Mr. Olgilvie's again." says Brent. "He told me he has more
sheds with parts in them. Maybe more of the missing pieces will turn up."
"Its worth a try!" says Brent's Dad. "Besides, we haven't excercised 'the Judge' for awhile.
She probably would like to take a run out in the country to limber up!"
In short order, Brent and his Dad drive into Mr. Olgilvie's farm yard. Brent spots him right
away sitting out on his front porch rocking away and seeming to enjoy the bright sunny day.
They both get out of the car and Mr. Olgilvie recognizes Brent.
"Come on up and join me!" he invites them. "I'll go in and make us some nice ice tea. We can
sit a spell and you can tell me how you are doing with the old lady."
"Sounds like a fine idea, Mr. Olgilvie. I'd like you to meet my Dad. Dad, this is Mr. Olgilvie."
"Pleased to meet you sir." Says Brent's Dad. "You have a fine looking place here."
"Yeah, I am kinda proud of it. But it is starting to get a little run down. I don't have the pep
I used to for keeping everything together. I've sold off all my livestock and rent all the rest
of the cropland. So all I have to do anymore is sit out here on the porch and remember betters
days gone by, between naps that is." he laughs. "Just a minute and I'll get a couple more
chairs. I think I can find some cookies as well to go with that tea."
Soon, all three are sitting and chatting away like they knew each other forever. Bent's Dad
talked about his folks and the farm they used to have in another part of the county. Turns out
his folks knew a lot of the folks Mr. Olgilvie used to know as well.
"Yeah, its the darndest thing. When you're young, you don't think about these things. But you
get to my age and one day you look around and shake your head at all the people that have gone
to their reward already. Makes me realize I'm probably not gonna be around much longer." said
Mr. Olgilvie.
"Oh, you look like you have a lot of life left in you!" exclaims Brent.
"Thats mighty kind of you, sonny. But I have to say, I've lived a pretty good life. I'm not
afraid to take that last ride into the sunset when it comes."
Talk turns to the old Mercury and Mr. Olgilvie gives them the history of it. His sister drove
it out from Arizona back in the 60s. The engine blew a head gasket and he meant to fix it for
her but never go around to doing it. He stored it in one of the sheds where is was protected
from the elements for the longest time.
His only son decided he wanted to work on it so he started stripping it down. Then he got
called to the army and damned if he wasn't killed in Vietnam. He had just got married and
never lived to see his only son born. Well my grandson grew up to be a fine strapping young
man, much like your Brent here. He was doing great things and I had hopes he would take over
this farm. He is the one that really tore the old Mercury down to its present condition.
I spent many happy times helping twist bolts and get the old girl taken apart so we could
restore her to a proper condition. We had just finished getting the body off the frame and
everything else stripped down, when he got a call. His National guard unit had been called up
for duty in Afghanistan. Well, I don't think I need to say anymore.
At this several tears streamed down the old mans eyes. Both Brent and his Dad came over and
gave the old man a hug and tried to comfort him. That seemed to help. He looked up them and
smiled as he thought about his losses.
"Well, I left the old girl sit in the shed for quite awhile. But every time I went out to the
barn, I was reminded of the boys. So last year, I finally had enough. I slid the old girl out
of the barn and took her over to where Brent found her the other day. Thats why she is still
in pretty good shape. I sure hope you guys can get her back together again, not only for my
sake but for my boys as well."
"We'll do our best, Mr. Olgivie!" said Brent. His Dad shook his head in agreement.
"I think you will find most of what you need in the sheds out back. Take your time. They aren't
locked up. Take whatever you need and don't be bashful." said Mr. Olgilvie.
"We can't thank you enough." said Brent's Dad. "We will try to do justice by the old girl. You
will be the first one we give a ride to when we get her up and running again."
"I'm looking forward to that day!" said Mr. Olgilvie.

Such a warm and touching story, my friend. You have to feel sad for Mr. Olgilvie - such a waste of young lives. But I'm sure Brent and his dad will have to old Mercury up and running in no time. Wonderful work on this scene.
