Description
Coran struggled back to the waking world slowly, his eyes fluttering open to find that dawn’s light was creeping into the sleeping cave. Most of the night was a blur, but he knew he hadn’t been alone on the large area of soft furs that served as the temples communal bed. Glancing around, he saw Mistale and Rowan, both also starting to stir back to consciousness, but all the drow priestesses were absent, clearly having already risen and set about their duties.
Finding their possessions neatly stacked near the cave entrance, they ventured out into the morning light to find the clearing abuzz with activity. Deryth and a couple other smiths labored at the forges, while a few of the clerics he recognized from last night, but hadn’t been formally introduced to, were working in the kitchen, as yet others sat about in a sewing circle mending or fashioning clothes of various types, but he couldn’t see Taenya anywhere.
After a few minutes Yrlissa approached them with two others flanking her, bearing small loafs of sweet dark bread, which they delivered before returning to their work in the kitchen. “We thought you needed your rest, so we didn’t wake you,” the drow ranger addressed them as they broke their morning fast. “When your ready, I’ll guide you to the trail to Velarsburg… its only a half-days march through the forest.”
“Thank you,” Coran replied gratefully, adding with sincere interest; “but I hoped to take my leave from Taenya before we left.”
“Mother didn’t think that would be wise,” she replied with more than a hint of concern in her voice. “She’s spent more time in the company of outsider and had more adventures in the outside world than any of us have before… and she’s grown quite found of you in particular. So much so, that mother fears she might be too tempted to leave with you when you go. Therefore, she has been sequestered to contemplate her place here and prepare herself to resume her duties to the temple. It’s not uncommon for us when we return from our Runs.”
“I see,” Coran admitted with a reluctant tone, “I don’t want cause her any undo distress… I wasn’t aware that she had even considered leaving the temple. She never mentioned any intention other than to return here and resume her duties.”
“I don’t think she realized how much she enjoyed being out there, beyond our sanctuary, until she was faced with returning to our simple lives here,” Yrlissa explained, clearly worried for her friend’s well-being.
“Then we should be on our way before we cause any further turmoil,” Mistale suggested, also reluctant to leave without saying goodbye to drow priestess she now considered a close friend and companion.
Setting out on a barely detectable trail into the untamed woods, they headed south west toward the frontier logging town, until they intersected a much better path, obviously used far more regularly, where Yrlissa announced; “Here’s where I leave you. Follow this trail and you should make Velarsburg sometime after high sun.”
Then, she stepped up to each Rowan and Mistale in turn, reaching up and place a long lingering kiss on their lips, before turning to Coran and wrapping her arms around his neck to claim his mouth in a kiss so passionate that it surprised them all, before smirking capriciously; “You will always be welcome at our temple… anytime you want to enjoy our ‘hospitality’ again… I, for one, certainly look forward to it.”
Turning on her heels, she vanished amongst the trees like a forest spirit before any of them could react.
“I wonder if that invitation included all of us,” Rowan snarked with an amused smile.
“Somehow I don’t think so,” Mistale teased with a mischievous grin of her own.

The last installment in the longest "book" I've ever done! Thank you to everyone who has followed along with my tale! I am working on "book 4", but there may be a little delay in the next installment.
I go "under the knife" tomorrow, so I may not be around to post any snarky comments. The worst part is I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 AM! (Oh my god that's early!) Which means I would have to get up at 3:00 AM to prep for the surgery... so, considering I'll spend most of tomorrow under antistatic, I may just not go to bed at all. The original plan was to remove my PD catheter and replace it, which would mean having to do hemodialysis for a month or so, but now their just going to try and repair the existing catheter... which will be a much less invasive operation.

Thanks again for all your kind comments!
I'd really like to thank everyone who followed my (rather lengthy) tale!
I'd also want to thank everyone who wished me well for my surgery today... Things went much better than I expected, and although I can't sit at the computer for very long, it's not inhibiting me as much as I thought it would... so I'm afraid you don't get to escape my snarky comments after all!
Axeye
Beautiful conclusion to your story my friend and I wish you total success with your surgery and a speedy, pain free recovery. Prayers for you to help this wish become reality. You will be missed!
zaqxsw
Thanks again for all your kind comments and your well wishes! Unfortunately, I'm afraid no one gets a reprieve from my snide remarks as predicted... The surgery went better than I could expected and except for not being able to sit at my computer for too long at once I'm pretty much able to function as normal. I'm even able to resume by home dialysis treatments as of tomorrow.
Deane
Great work on her expression, which is beautifully captured here. Good to hear all went well with your surgery, and wish you a speedy recovery.

Thanks again for all your kind comments! It seems like my muse got lost in the dungeon in my last installment of this series... I hit a writer's block that I just haven't been able to overcome!
