Description

“Just a brief visit to Myth Drannor so that Zharilee can recover an artifact from her family’s ancestral estate,” Coran divulged in a nonchalant tone. “Myth Drannor… where we both nearly met our end?” Roryn questioned, stunned by the revelation, then he added in a dead-pan voice; “Put me back in the stocks!” “It will not be that bad,” Coran explained, ignoring the dwarf’s jest. “She has a map to the estate and the catacombs underneath, as well as clues to help us bypass the hazards there. We need your help to avoid or disarm the traps that protect the vaults… which hold an abundance of treasures left behind when the city fell.” “Oh, is that all,” the dwarven thief smirked, “and lady Zharilee here is amenable to us looting her family’s treasures.” “What was left behind when my family fled the city isn’t of any value to anyone as long as it remains there,” the moon elf admitted. “Anything I can recover only benefits my family and you are welcome to your share of what remains, which will be more gold than you could possible carry.” “You’ll be surprised how much gold a dwarf can carry when he’s motivated. But I agree to your terms,” the dwarf confirmed with a greedy glint in his eyes. “So, what kind of artifact is worth facing such dangers for?” “A sword of scion, often called a moonblade,” Zharilee explained. “It can only be claimed by a worth heir of house Morningstar and only by first light of the first day of a season, so we must complete this task within seven days.” “I wouldn’t worry about that… the problem will not be getting there in time… the problem will be getting there alive,” Roryn stated with small measure of sarcasm. Later that evening in the common room of the Dark Door, Glen’s only inn and tavern, obviously built for dwarves, but comfortable enough for visiting merchants, the quartet set around a quite table while Roryn studied the maps Zharilee provided, comparing them to ones he had made during his previous venture into Myth Drannor, while the staff and local patrons eyed them coldly. “You’re not very popular here,” Tessele commented to Roryn as she scanned the room, seeing only hostile faces. “They’ll get over it… they always do,” he replied absently, his attention clearly focused on the maps in front of him. Then he remarked specifically to Coran; “It looks like the Morningstar estate is just past Shaundakul’s Throne. You still have friends there don’t you? Well, at least one… assuming she’s still alive.” “Yes… assuming she’s still alive. I’ve been planning to seek shelter there,” Coran admitted with a knowing smile. He sincerely hoped the person Roryn was referring to was still at the temple in Myth Drannor… and still alive, for several reasons. Then he looked to Zharilee and commented; “Of course, if we want their help, they will expect a share of the treasure we recover… particularly anything that will help them defend their temple.” “I don’t know what other weapons or magic might have been left behind,” the moon elf relied with a heavy sigh, realizing that everyone involved will want a piece of what they find. Then she added thoughtfully; “But I’d assume that anything that might help in defending this temple would have been used to defend the estate when the city fell and would have been taken to protect the survivors when they fled.” What she didn’t mention was the references to something else her research had indicated was left behind… something dark and possible very dangerous.
