Description

Their trek to the outskirts of Myth Drannor was relatively uneventful; a day’s travel up the Moonsea Ride, then they delved into the trackless forest. Abandoned for over six centuries, the boarders of the overgrown ruins weren’t distinct or clearly marked, and it wasn’t until the quartet stumbled upon some decidedly manmade structures that they realized that they’d entered the city, immediately raising their guard and beginning to move with purposeful stealth, constantly scanning for threats. It took most of the day, moving cautiously, several times having to hide from roving monsters like a hunting owlbear, a gang of quarreling goblins and even a roaming beholder, but they were able to avoid conflict until they reached a structure that had clearly undergone serious renovations; it’s tall fortress-like walls reaching well over thirty feet, while the surrounding area had been cleared of debris out to about a hundred feet. Approaching cautiously, just as the sun was beginning to sink towards the treetops, they saw sentries atop the wall watching them… until they reached about twenty feet from the heavily reinforced gate, when they were halted by a command from the guards; “Identify yourself and your intentions!” “Coran Dundragon, friend to your temple,” he replied, holding his hands out in a gesture of peace, “we seek shelter and aid.” “I see you’re still traveling in questionable company,” a female voice familiar to both Coran and Roryn taunted from the wall, drawing their eyes to a dark-haired woman who approached the fortifications above gate. “You have to admit he came in handy last time,” he called back, happy that she was still at the temple… and alive. At her command, the gate creaked open to admit them and they quickly entered, before it was secured behind them. Coming down the stairs beside the gate house, the tall dark-haired woman approached the companions with a cocky smile. Standing just a few inches less than Coran, her clearly feminine form was thickly knotted with corded muscles, while her features where simply stunning. All but ignoring the others, she addressed the ruggedly handsome monk directly; “So what brings you back to darken our door again?” “We’re here to recover an artifact left in lady Zharilee’s ancestral estate when the city fell… a moonblade,” he answered, motioning to the beautiful moon elf. “She has maps to lead us to the estate and through the catacombs beneath, as well as clues to help us bypass the traps and hazards that protect the vaults there… but we only have four days to retrieve it, because she has to perform a ritual to claim it at first light on the Autumn Equinox, and we don’t know what condition the estate or the catacombs are in. So, we could use some help… if you can spare some muscle.” Smiling at his reference to muscle, she turn an appraising eye toward Zharilee, recognizing her presence for the first time, then looked to Tessele, before snarking; “If they’re all you brought I can see why you’d need more muscle… They don’t look like the type to haul rocks or dig through the dirt.” “There are more ways to move heavy objects than with muscle,” Zharilee snapped back, insulted by her implication, “and I will do whatever I have to recover my family’s legacy… as well as the other treasure left behind… which you and your temple could share in.” “Gold doesn’t mean much here,” she replied dismissively, but then added; “However, any magic or weapon that could help defend us from the constant threats we face might be worth our efforts to help you.” Seeming to consider the situation for a moment, she finally continued; “I’m Katernin Nemestsk, captain of the guard of Shaundakul’s Throne, and I will support your request to our high priest… but he will decide if there’s any merit to your quest.”
