Description

The Mélusine Tower, dating from 1242, is the only preserved part of the Lusignan castle. The few remaining remains of the old castle were destroyed in the middle of the 19th century and after burial and levelling, formed the current Place du Bail, used as a fairground until the middle of the 20th century. Nowadays it offers an exceptional setting for village events. It was included in the supplementary inventory of Historic Monuments in 1927. This tower is original for the time because of its exceptional height (45m above the ditch) and its circular shape. La Tour Mélusine datant de 1242, est la seule partie conservée du château fort des Lusignan. Les quelques vestiges restant de l’ancien château-fort ont été détruits au milieu du XIXème siècle et après enfouissement et nivellement, ont constitué l’actuelle place du Bail, utilisée en champ de foire jusqu’au milieu du XXème siècle. Elle offre de nos jours un cadre exceptionnel pour les manifestations du village. Elle a été inscrite à l’inventaire supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques en 1927. Cette tour est originale pour l’époque de part sa hauteur exceptionnelle (45m par rapport au fossé) et sa forme circulaire.
