Description

I believe this was taken from the Bridge Deck just outside the Pilot House. Hatches 1-4 are in the forward part of the ship. The railing below us (with the boxes stacked behind it) is part of the deck which covers the reactor. The boxes probably have to do with continuing work. One thing about this ship which is really characteristic is the cargo-handling masts and booms. They are very futuristic looking but not as practical as they could be. Handling cargo on and off loading was very man-intensive. Had they waited a few years, my guess is they could have come up with something more practicable for a modern ship but the clock was ticking... didn't want "the commies" get their merchant nuke in the water first. As it was, the competition was a massive icebreaker: LENIN. Not really a merchant, but very useful given the sea conditions around the old USSR. Time to poke around up forward. Enjoy; thanks for viewing. Now you can really see the surroundings. Delightfully industrial, eh?
