Description

They live in groups of up to 80 individuals. These groups are divided into small subgroups of a few families led by an adult male. They spend most of their time resting in large bands or sunbathing alone in the sun. This behaviour is probably used to help them regulate their body temperature, which varies with ambient temperature (they are not strictly homeotherms). It produces large quantities of hyraceum (sticky mass, a mixture of excrement and urine) which has been used in the traditional treatment of several diseases such as epilepsy and convulsions and continues to be used in perfumery.
