Description

The Cape Daman (Procavia capensis) also called Rock Daman is a species of mammal of the order Hyracoidea. On the surface, it looks like a groundhog or a big guinea pig with its ears and short tail. It is called dassie in South Africa and pimbi in Swahili. The size of a hare, it has a pair of long incisors (kinds of tusks) and molars that resemble those of rhinos. It has four toes on the front legs (plantigrade) and three on the hind legs (semi-digitigrade). They have large plantar soles with pads that are kept moist by sweat-like secretions. Males are slightly larger than females.
