Description

Lake Michigan, a few blocks from home. 2010. Groynes are structures in water which keep silt---and ships---from coming ashore. In winter, our groynes get slathered with waves, then the freezing winds sculpt the waves, and, bingo: You get these! (Ice monsters) Seemed fitting for now... Still commenting, and I'll try to make a return to all of you when I'm through. It's been great to sit with your work again. Thanks for your always wonderful visits! m (this is 6 blocks from Second City---hard to believe it's the same city!) ------------------

Love this photo and the colours within.
who knew Mother Nature was such a great artist?
if you've got a slightly deviant mind, you could have all sorts of fun with the statement, "In winter, our groynes get slathered with waves, then the freezing winds sculpt the waves."

this is so cool and really fascinating, but ah, So Cold! they look like frozen soldiers guarding the coastline.

Groynes. What a fun word :) Even in 2010 you were photographing, as if you were born to do it. Love these amazing, but scary groynes. Hope no one was trying to lick them :P

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful natural formation, Mark, and there are so many. Unbelievable what a miracle, I would like to see this in real life, so impressive, and I have no idea how many there are. But one thing I know for sure, it's cold, and Mark, no. two, you have a fantastic hand, plus an eye for photography!

Now that is really cool, Mark! And probably really cold as well... You are a braver soul than I.... Not much of a cold weather photographer, myself - I need to man up and get some cold weather shots, really. I just need a little pond closer to me like the one you have there... LOL

And a big 'groan' (or maybe groyne) for Mike..... 😆

What hath nature wrought? What marvelously sculptured barriers you captured here, Mark, tons of them as far as the eye can see. I like the balance, perspective and sense of depth you have achieved in this shot. And to add a bit of levity to this comment, I wonder if they would bend over in pain if kicked in the midsection. Hint: that is if they were spelled 'groins.'
