Description
Vought OS2U "Kingfisher" scout plane, launched from the USS Iowa, heads out to be the long-range eyes of the attack group.
Scout planes were first used during WW I as observation or reconnaissance platforms to give commanders eyes to see enemy movements and tactics beyond their visual range and from a birds-eye view. Hot air balloons had been used in this purpose previously, but the airplane was mobile, a definite advantage in range, and in not being a "sitting duck for enemy fighters and artillery. The first naval uses employed standard aircraft launched of of gun turrets, but not being equipped with floats meant either finding land or ditching in the sea when the mission was completed. The addition of floats to the aircraft was a definite plus, and stand-alone catapults in conjunction with cranes and winches to recover returning scouts was a successful solution to a watery landing. The advent of aircraft carriers as a dedicated launch and recovery floating airfield eventually ended the necessity for battleship and cruiser scout planes.

Awesome scene - a LOT of stuff going on here. I hope people will look at the Full Image. The water and sky effects are VERY good! Great lighting and SO many vessels in there - DS has clearly progressed a long way since I last used it. Excellent.

Flying alone in those planes could be a risky business too, as they could not manoeuvre as well as the land based fighters they sometimes met in the air. Nice composition and the sky is superb.

Very nice image with lots of action going on. But take a close look at the BB number! It looks like BB62, which is the BB New Jersey, not BB Iowa. I think I commented on this some years ago when the BB model first made its appearance. However, this does not detract from the image. Interesting with the 2 carriers, suggesting battle group in the (not so) Pacific! Keep up the good work, and thanks for the information about the Kingfisher! :-)

I corrected the error. Thank you for noticing. The model I used is BVR's USS Missouri (BB63) since it and the Iowa were essentially identical.

Great render. There was a story of one Kingfisher pilot actually shooting down an enemy aircraft during the course of his mission. Fine image.
