Description
Captured 8/15/2009 at the beautiful Huntington Library, Art Collections, & Botanical Gardens in beautiful San Marino, California.
Echinocactus grusonii, popularly known as the golden barrel cactus, golden ball or mother-in-law's cushion, is a well known species of cactus, and is endemic to east-central Mexico.
It is rare and endangered in the wild, where it is found near Mesa de León in the state of Querétaro, and in the state of Hidalgo. The population was critically reduced in the 1990s, by the creation of the Zimapán Dam and reservoir in Hidalgo. The cactus grows in volcanic rock on slopes, at altitudes around 1,400 metres (4,600 ft)

Boy these Huntington Gardens are a beauty, and you've gotten so many beautiful shots of it. Your light here is so 'graced'---the yellows on these cactus 'balls' is luminous, and it makes them look like they're lined up in the sun for a yoga lecture or maybe a dance. The rest of the greenery is captured lushly. In fact, it almost looks like it's underwater, the way everything undulates upwards. A really luminous shot, with a near olive-yellow tone. And fine crop too. Very inviting.
Harry, I have been called away, I'll be back later. A scintillating batch this morning, it'll open my eyes as I begin my day here in cool chicago...

Such a shame that so many beautiful plants (and animals) are on the endangered list. You really got a great photo of these!
