To me this has such character. The man is clearly a guard, but he seems caught in a reflective moment, and looks like---at least at this moment---he'd rather be with whoever he's thinking about, or wherever he's thinking about. An off-moment in his job, the kind of moment we've all had throughout our lives. In that vein, you've got him in shadow, except for his face which is somewhat weary and lost: I love how he looks away, while dressed in wings and gown, with a wolf behind him. And somehow the arch gives a very formal, monumental feeling to the image, while he seems vacated from monumentality at this moment. (His sword is on the floor, like he's let down his guard and is lost in thought.) A loving portrait of complex emotion. Very compelling.
