Description

As promised from my last post, some pictures of the work being carried out on the restoration of the Vulcan bomber XL426. Our current task is to help replace some of the (very), aged fastenings around cowlings and service access panels. The lower pictures show some of the areas we have been working on. Specifically, removal of the old parts without damaging the original panels and manufacturing replacement fasteners and tooling to install new components. The airframe is over 50 years old now and hard to replace in many places, so great care must be taken. In tribute to the remarkable fastening design still being made today by myself and company, the replacement parts simply swap over and work exactly as before. Other teams are now working on the final stages of fitting a replacement engine, with a taxi trial planned shortly. My sincere thanks to the Vulcan Restoration Trust, Peter Rainey and the team of tireless volunteers who contribute to keeping this aircraft alive and serviceable to proudly display our great aviation heritage. XL426 is based at Southend airport in Essex, and although sadly, will never fly again, can be readily viewed by the public on open days. For more information, please visit: https://avrovulcan.com/xl426 Many thanks to all who support my work.

What a great capture of this lady. Very interesting work you're doing here Deane. I am a big proponent of restoration work, whether it be buildings, furniture, artwork, etc. Humans have this nasty tendency to discard, tear down things...so much in the way of cultural, industrial history is lost that way--it's nice to connect to the past.

Well, I know a lot of 50 year olds that have much more wrinkles and can not fly either. Hope you get her preserved and that a lot of people get a chance to see her.

Such a shame it won't be permitted to fly any more! I remember seeing a Vulcan Bomber at a secret Military Location, my Father and I was invited to visit, because of his SOE connections!

That is amazing Deane. Firstly, I'm glad to see that you and others are so dedicated in preserving the beauty and grace of this bird. I don't doubt that those who flew her and trusted their lives to her would thank you and your team for your efforts. And she is an awesome sight. Your capture really provides a sense of scale one does not normally get with aircraft. In spite of what you say, I can easily imagine her taking to the air again that very morning to resume her duties. A grey, wet morning which adds the atmosphere of her glory days ready to pierce the sky.

Very impressive work, Deane. It must be exciting to see that warbird come back to life, at least, visually. 🙂

Verging on a 'D'. Complete overhaul of most of the control systems, airbrakes, primary hydraulics, bay doors, and avionics where replacements can be found. The engine re-fit is now complete and when we supply our new fairing parts this month, she should be ready for that taxi run :)
