Description
This tower was built to house an important water pipe leading two miles out into Lake Michigan as a source of fresh water for the city in the 1860s. It and the pumping station across the street survived the Chicago Fire of 1871.
Note: as mentioned in the article in the first link above, they were not the only structures that survived; but the water tower especially was the most iconic one that survived.
Now, I made a critical error with an old upload: Chicago Avenue Pumping Station - Chicago, which was previously titled as "Old Water Tower." I changed title and info on that picture. Sorry for the mistake.

This looks like a place for Goths to hang out.

Drusilla just became interested in the Tower. Old World architecture (and anything inspired by them) is to her liking.

An excellent capture, Wes, and some interesting info as well...
Like most people, I used to think those water towers were primarily for storage. In reality it seems their primary job is stabilizing the pressure in the distribution system, with emergency use as a secondary function.

the architecture resembles a church more than a water tower. great capture
