Description

Pencils. The title means "Over There" This is going VERY fast! Only about 3 hours of work, and it is already pretty close to finished. The model is my friend Charlie. The idea is that Charlie is looking at something very cool left of frame, but you don't get to see it. This is more about the unusual composition than it is a portrait of Charlie, but it is a pretty strong likeness, and I am proud of it as a portrait too. I am at the point where I need to stop looking at it for a while and then come back, otherwise I will not notice the issues with it. Here are the main things I am considering (I will listen to whatever comments others have): 1)The far side of the T-shirt looks weird. It is pretty close to the reference photo, but that is really no excuse. I am making a drawing, not a photograph, and if reality is busted then it is my job to fix it. 2)Background shading for contrast. Normally I would have done this right off the bat, even before a lot of the detailing, but the whole point of this composition is how he is looking off into nothing, so omitting the shading and making it extra barren fits the theme. I don't know if I will add this or not. 3) Just general observational errors I might have made. The photo was on my phone, and I never bothered to put it on a larger screen or anything. This might have made me squint a bit to get some of the detail, and I could easily have not observed something correctly. Also, finishing the whole thing in 3 hours seems way too fast to have really registered the details well. This is especially true when the picture has so much hair: Hair is hard!. If you guys spot anything, I would appreciate it if you told me.

It looks like Charlie is scared of something or very surprised at what he's seeing.
