Description

There was a question a while back about animating a fractal's offset parameter on only one axis. This is a quick test. Camera is 10Km up, pointing directly downward. The planet is flat, only the color of the material is animated. The first segment is the offset going from 0 to 1 on all three axes simultaneously. The second segment is on the X axis only. The third segment is on the Y axis only (this segment is obvious, as a rather static texture slides down the screen), and the last segment is the Z axis only, again with a slow slide, but from left to right instead. I'm kind of surprised. I sort of expected Y and Z to look a lot like X did. It probably depends on where on the globe the camera is. I'm in the default new planet location, which is slightly off of the equator.

Thx Caly this very helpful and has helped raise a problem....( it depends on where you are on the planet) I have a terrains shape and a water plane that has an equal displacement. I wanted to animate the Y offest to see what you are already showing me here. Why would I want to do that ..... something Ive always believed Mojo should be able to do but never sussed it out...Create waterfalls. If you offset the displaced water plane top terrain the there are 2 points that can be evaluated...then begins the work!!

I've got some of the same questions when asked about 'steam' for my lava. I've also tried, with lackluster success, displacing the ocean above the terrain. I imagine one could get effects which look awesome in one spot, but really weird in others.

With waterfalls specifically, I'm thinking that working with a Rivers terrain might simplify things, being able to use 'Helper Position' which gives you a more precise planar coordinate system (limited to a finite area, not global). With altitude as well, you'll have three coordinates to manipulate. It also has a water material which is automagically confined to the river channels.
