It's Sunday, all day, YAY!! Do you remember that hand painted sky that I'd added to my FREE2USE album? I posted it, this last Thursday... Well, If you're not sure what I'm talking about, or don't know what I mean. So you know, I offer a set of free images that I usually paint and then offer to my fellow artists. So they can make use of them however they want, or use them as a reference to paint themselves. The free images are located on Facebook account, by going to my photos and going into an album that I created, called (Free to Use Images), So, you know now... Anyway, I'd gone ahead and finished painting the rest of that sky I stared in acrylic paint and previously posted as a free sky background. I decided to finish this sky and make it part of a mountain landscape. This is a scene I painted without any reference, just using my imagination. I painted a sloping terrain that is covered in colorful wildflowers. This sky, being a very stormy and moody sky, I knew, would add some interest to this scene. I painted it as a late afternoon sky, after some rain and showers. It's moist and damp, being there was showers through the day, and the sun brightly breaks though the cloudy and stormy sky to highlight the lovely wildflowers growing nearby. In between an outcropping of rocks and boulders. At this high an elevation, there's defiantly patches of fog and mist at a distance. You can smell the crisp freshness of the recent rains, and the lovely aroma of blooming wildflowers in the air. You threw pretty much your whole palate at this. Usually I would recommend trying to limit the color range somewhat, but this time the extreme colors work fairly well to make the flowers look very lush.
I am a bit worried about the balance of the piece, with all that thick, almost impasto style paint at the bottom and then the much thinner and lighter colors on top. Maybe it could benefit from spreading things out a little more evenly. I am particularly thrown off by the almost blank area right in the middle of the canvas between the bottom of the mountains and the top of the flowers. Maybe a tree or two there cold help. I also wish for more variation in the heights of the mountains to add some visual interest to the center of the canvas, which feels like it needs it.
My favorite part of this is the rocks in the foreground. The brush strokes there are bolder than elsewhere, and they carve out nice shapes.

Hello tuerda, thank you for the wonderfully detailed critique and observation of my painting! You bring up many great points for the improvements of the composition. I do have a tenancy to overdue the colors, some say this is a bit of a trademark of my work, being they see the bold use of color and know right away this is one of my paintings. I do need to be more mindful of limiting my pallet, so I do not over saturate the painting with to many un-natural colors. When I first began to paint I was partial to painting styles that are similar to AnnMarie Bone. She is a traditional artist whom also uses much vivid colors in her work. But, I'm trying to learn not to go so overboard with saturation! Even thought, It's a bad habit that I'm having some difficulty learning to breaking from. Really, all of the other ideas and things you mentioned are really great constructive criticism and helps me grow as an artist. I'll keep them in mind when I'm painting next time, from my imagination. Maybe, I wouldn't made some of those mistakes you've mentioned, had I used a reference photo to begin with. So to keep my composition more in proper perspective and balanced. This is an issue that I have when I'm just painting from imagination. You are right, it could have been greatly improved with those things corrected, that you've mentioned. Thank you again for reaching out and giving me great pointers on this, It helps allot!!
