Description

The Carolinian duck, capable of climbing thanks to its claws and tail, nests in a tree hole. It was first observed in Caroline, hence its name. The males are very colourful during each mating season this plumage may then be replaced by a duller plumage, similar to that of the females. The Carolinian duck almost disappeared in the 19th century, hunted for its beautiful feathers used in hats or in the making of flies for fishing. Over the past 100 years, populations have increased thanks to habitat protection measures, hunting regulations and the installation of nesting boxes.
