Le canard carolin, capable de grimper grâce à ses griffes et sa queue, niche dans un trou d'arbre. Il fut observé pour la première fois en Caroline, d'où son nom. Les mâles sont très colorés lors de chaque saison des amours mai ce plumage sera remplacé ensuite par un plumage plus terne, semblable à celui des femelles. Le canard carolin a bien failli disparaître au 19ème siècle, chassé pour ses belles plumes utilisées dans les chapeaux ou dans la confection de mouches pour la pêche. Depuis une centaine d'années, les populations sont en augmentation grâce aux mesures de protection de l'habitat, de la régulation de la chasse, de l'installation de nichoirs. The Carolinian duck, capable of climbing thanks to its claws and tail, nests in a tree hole. It was first observed in Caroline, hence its name. The males are very colourful during each mating season this plumage may then be replaced by a duller plumage, similar to that of the females. The Carolinian duck almost disappeared in the 19th century, hunted for its beautiful feathers used in hats or in the making of flies for fishing. Over the past 100 years, populations have increased thanks to habitat protection measures, hunting regulations and the installation of nesting boxes.
